Before You Leave:
Address Change:
- Post Office: Give forwarding address.
- Charge accounts, credit cards.
- Subscriptions: Notice requires several weeks.
- Friends and Relatives.
Bank:
- Transfer funds, arrange check cashing in new city.
- Arrange credit references.
Insurance:
- Notify company of new location for coverages: life, health, auto, fire.
Utility Companies:
- Gas, electric, water, phone, fuel, garbage.
- Get refunds on any deposits made.
Delivery Service:
Medical, Dental, Prescription:
- Ask doctor and dentist for referrals; transfer needed prescriptions, eyeglasses, x-rays. Obtain birth records, medical records, etc.
Pets:
- Ask about regulations for licenses, vaccinations, tags, etc.
And Don't Forget To:
- Empty freezer, plan use of foods.
- Defrost freezer and clean refrigerator. Place charcoal inside to dispel odors.
- Have appliances serviced for moving.
- Remember TV antenna or cable.
- Clean rugs and clothing before moving; have them wrapped for moving.
- Check with your moving company; insurance coverage, packing and unpacking labor, arrival day, various shipping papers, method and time of expected payment.
- Plan for special needs of infants or pets.
And on Moving Day:
- Carry enough cash or travelers checks to cover the cost of moving services and expenses until you make banking connections in your new city.
- Carry jewelry and important documents yourself; or use registered mail.
- Plan for transporting pets; they are poor traveling companions if unhappy.
- Pack an overnight bag. You may be unable to locate toiletries and necessities that first night in your new home.
- Let someone know the route and travel schedule, including overnight stops. Use this person for a message center.
- Double check closets, drawers and shelves to make sure they are empty.
- Leave all old keys needed by new owner with the real estate agent.
And at Your New Address:
- Obtain certified check or cashiers check necessary for closing real estate transaction.
- Check on service for phone, gas, electricity, etc.
- Check pilot lights on stove, water heater and furnace.
- Have all appliances checked.
- Ask mail carrier for mail being held for your arrival.
- Have new address recorded on driver's license. Get to DMV as soon as convenient to have license changed and car registered; cars usually need to be registered within 5 days if moving out of state.
- Visit city offices and register for voting.
- Register family in new place of worship.
- Register children in school.
- Arrange for medical services; Doctors, dentists, veterinarian, etc.
